EW introduces us to the Fifty Shades costume designer …

Filming on the movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey is officially underway, and an Oscar-winning costume designer is dressing (and undressing) the film’s stars.

According to IMDB, Mark Bridges — who is best known for his work on Silver Linings Playbook, The Fighter, and Captain Phillips, and won the Oscar for The Artist in 2012 — joined the cast and crew on location in Vancouver over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The first photo from the set shows Dakota Johnson (as Anastasia Steele) and Jamie Dornan (as Christian Grey) filming a scene that appears to be the couple’s first rendezvous. In the book, Anastasia is described as wearing a navy-blue jacket, blue sweater, skirt, and a pair of brown boots when she meets Christian, who is clad in a “fine gray suit, white shirt, and black tie.” While both characters are fully clothed, Bridges has undoubtedly been busy pulling together a wardrobe that will consist of lots of lingerie for our heroine and plenty of crisp white shirts and ties for the leading man.

Will the costume designer take all his cues from the book, or will he make some sartorial changes?

Fifty Shades fans will have to wait until the movie hits theaters in February 2015 to find out, but until then they can rest assured knowing that Bridges is one of Hollywood’s most talented costume designers.

At the age of 14, Bridges created his first costume sketch for a play in which he was appearing. After graduating with a masters in costume design from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, he found work as an assistant on films like Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers and Nixon, but his big break came in 1995 when he began collaborating with writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson on Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and There Will Be Blood. In 2012 Bridges won the Oscar for his work on The Artist.

With major fashion labels like Armani and Prada playing a role in recent movies, I have to wonder whether the Fifty Shades wardrobe will serve as a form of product placement. I wonder if the execs at Calvin Klein are clamoring to get Christian Grey into a pair of their tighty whities. (After all, before scoring the role, Dornan was best known as the face of the underwear brand.) One can only imagine what Bridges has in store for the highly anticipated sex scenes.
